Summary of topic and event

The increasing demand for timber buildings for different kinds of uses presents challenges in the planning, construction, use, repair, and decommissioning phases. In this Training School we invite practitioners involved in different aspects of timber construction to share their experience and approaches regarding architectural and structural design, fire safety, durability, acoustics, construction, dealing with authorities, repair, and design for disassembly, amongst other topics. The event will allow an open exchange of practical knowledge and ideas on how to successfully deal with the many specific, and sometimes conflicting, aspects of timber buildings. Depending on the weather and on pending authorisations, a walking excursion to timber buildings in the city of Zurich is planned for Tuesday afternoon.

Selection criteria

The number of participants is limited, and priority will be given to members of COST Action CA20139 who already have significant practical and/or research experience in various aspects of timber buildings. Gender and country balance will be carefully considered in the selection process.

Who should attend

Members of Cost Action HELEN interested in practical aspects related to the planning, construction, use, repair, and decommissioning of modern timber buildings. Attendees are expected to actively participate in the discussions and share their experience.

Costs

Participation in the Training School is free of charge for invited members of COST Action CA20139. The COST Action will partially fund the travel and accommodation costs for eligible participants, based on budget availability. This funding will cover long-distance travel expenses (up to 400 EUR*) and includes a daily allowance (215 EUR) for accommodation, meals, short-distance travel and other incidental costs.

* This limit may be waived for individual participants if they can show, within a reasonable time before the travel date, that there is no reasonable travel arrangement within this limit. A maximum limit of 1,500 EUR nevertheless still applies. Contact Amy Simmons ([email protected]) to request additional expenditures.

Participants will be requested to pay 90.‑ CHF, in cash, for lunches and coffee breaks (this value might change). Participants will also be requested to pay an amount to be announced in case they join the dinner on 19 May.
